What to Pack for Your Cycling Holiday in the Alps

Your Slipstream Adventures packing list for the French Alps

If you’re heading to the Alps this summer for a week of riding with us at Slipstream Adventures, or just planning your first cycling holiday in the mountains, knowing what to pack can make all the difference.

The French Alps offer some of the most iconic climbs and descents in the world, but conditions can vary and the long days in the saddle mean a little planning goes a long way. Here are some of the key things to pack for your trip.

🚴‍♂️ On the Bike

  • Road bike – Clean, serviced, and geared for the mountains. Compact or semi-compact gearing is ideal.

  • Helmet – Mandatory for all rides.

  • Cycling shoes & cleats – Make sure they’re in good condition and if you’re renting a bike, please check with us that they’re compatible.

  • Pedals – If you’re hiring a bike locally, bringing your own pedals eliminates one of the variabilities of your own bike and the tension will be what you’re used to. Otherwise, the shop can also provide Look or Shimano pedals.

  • Kit – Our accommodation will always have a washing machine and dryer that’s free for you to use. However, to save spending a lot of your downtime washing, bring at least 2–3 full sets of kit. We recommend:

    • Bib shorts - they stay in place better during long days in the saddle

    • Jerseys

    • Light gilet or windproof layer

    • Lightweight waterproof jacket (Alpine storms can appear even in summer)

  • Gloves – If you feel the cold on descents.

  • Arm and leg warmers – Alternative to a windbreaker for early starts and high altitudes.

  • Socks – Plenty. Especially if they’re white!

  • Sunglasses – Essential for eye protection and visibility.

  • Sun cream – Mountain sun is stronger than you think.

🛠️ Tools & Spares

There are great bike shops in Morzine if you need to buy anything while you’re out here. We’ve got a fully equipped bike stand and tools at the chalet for assembling and minor adjustments, but you should bring:

  • Saddlebag

  • Spare inner tube

  • Tyre levers

  • Mini pump or CO2 inflator (We can provide a CO2 canister and they are able to be purchased locally)

  • Multi-tool

  • Quick link

  • Disc brake pad spacers (essential if flying with disc brakes)

  • Spare hanger - if your hanger gets damaged during transportation, this little piece can render your bike out of action for the trip.

  • Any specialist tools your setup requires (e.g. electronic charging cables)

🏕️ Off the Bike

  • Casual clothes – For dinners, relaxing at the chalet, or exploring town.

  • Warm layers – Evenings can be chilly in the mountains, even in July.

  • Swimwear – All our chalets have hot tubs, and there’s wild swimming nearby in Lac Montriond.

  • Comfortable shoes – For walking to the lake or exploring Morzine.

  • Flip-flops or sandals – Handy for post-ride lounging.

🧘‍♀️ Recovery & Extras

  • Stretching gear – We provide a massage gun, mats and resistance bands in the chalet.

  • Massage – You can book a sports massage with our local therapist, (more info sent before your trip).

  • Snacks – There will be plenty of food at breakfast and dinner. We incorporate cafe and bakery stops into the ride, but for snacks such as energy bars, gels, or drink mix, bring it with you.

  • Hydration tablets – Useful on longer, hotter days - especially if you cramp easily!

🛫 Travel Essentials

  • Passport

  • Travel insurance – You must ensure it covers cycling in the mountains.

  • Bike bag / box – If flying with your bike. (Transfers from Geneva include bike transport.)

  • Plug adapter – France uses Type C or E power sockets (two round pins).

Final Tips

  • Laundering – All of our chalets have washing machines, so you can pack lighter.

  • Weather – June to August is usually hot and sunny, but mountain weather is unpredictable — a lightweight waterproof is essential.

  • Packing cubes – A great way to keep kit organised for the week, especially in the chalet.

  • GPX files – We’ll send these out in advance. Make sure your GPS device is ready and can load GPX routes onto it.
